This Is How Dragons Lie…

There are some moments that seem small when they happen, but later you realise they changed the direction of everything.

For me, one of those moments happened in a labyrinth in the woods at the end of my garden.

I had received what felt like a clear inner instruction to build a labyrinth there.

It was a simple three-circuit path made from leaves, held within a little temple of trees.

I had already been exploring labyrinths, sacred geometry, dowsing and the subtle relationship between people and place.

But dragons were not yet part of that story.

Then one day, while walking and working with the labyrinth, a message came through very clearly:

“This is how dragons lie.”

I had never consciously connected dragons with labyrinths before.

I didn’t really know what to do with the information.

So I did what I tend to do when something mysterious appears in my life.

I got curious.

The breadcrumb arrives

The very next day, my friend and fellow dowser David Atkinson lent me a book by Hamish Miller and Paul Broadhurst called The Dance of the Dragon.

That timing alone made me smile.

But when I looked at the back of the book, I stopped.

There was an image of a dragon curled into a form that looked remarkably like a labyrinth.

It felt like one of those moments of synchronicity when life seems to place a breadcrumb directly in your path.

Not necessarily an answer.

More like an invitation.

Keep going.

That moment became the beginning of a much bigger exploration.

Following the dragon

Since then, labyrinths and dragons have become one of the deepest threads in my work with earth energies.

I have followed dowsing rods through ancient landscapes.

I have discovered what feel to me like hidden labyrinths.

I have noticed dragon-like forms in sacred geometry, old maps, earth-energy lines and the folds of the land itself.

I have also had experiences of dragons through inner vision, symbolism and synchronicity.

Again and again, I find myself returning to the same questions:

What is the relationship between dragons and the Earth?

Why do labyrinths and dragon symbolism seem to appear together?

And when we walk a labyrinth, are we in some way walking the dragon?

I don’t feel the need to arrive at a neat conclusion.

The exploration itself is part of the magic.

Dowsing, curiosity and a little Indiana Jones spirit

Perhaps the simplest way to describe this part of my work is that it combines dowsing with curiosity.

There is definitely a little bit of Indiana Jones in me.

Follow the clue.

Notice the pattern.

Walk the land.

Ask the question.

See what happens next.

Sometimes the next clue is revealed through dowsing.

Sometimes through myth or archaeology.

Sometimes through a song that suddenly appears in my awareness.

Sometimes through a book someone hands me at exactly the right moment.

And sometimes it is simply the shape of the landscape itself.

An unfolding journey

That message in the woods - “This is how dragons lie” - led me into an ongoing exploration of labyrinths, dragons and the living landscape.

It has taken me to places including The Sanctuary at Avebury, Merrivale, Dragon Hill at Uffington, The Hurlers and Mont Saint-Michel.

Each has its own story.

Each seems to reveal something different.

Some through dowsing.

Some through landscape.

Some through mythology.

Some through moments of deep stillness or unexpected inner experience.

I’ll be sharing those stories separately, because each deserves space of its own.

But for me, they all begin here.

In a small labyrinth in the woods.

With a message I did not yet understand:

“This is how dragons lie.”

And a book arriving the very next day that seemed to whisper:
