How to prepare for an interview, new project, big meeting or presentation with confidence
In my work with clients, I often use simple techniques that can help people feel more grounded, confident and resourceful before an important moment.
One particularly accessible technique is the Circle of Excellence, drawn from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). It can be useful before an interview, presentation, difficult conversation, new project or any situation where you would like to reconnect with a particular inner quality - perhaps confidence, calmness, focus or creativity.
At its heart, the Circle of Excellence is a visualisation exercise that helps you reconnect with inner resources and positive states you have experienced before.
The exercise involves imagining a circle on the ground in front of you and using it as an anchor for the qualities you want to bring into the situation ahead.
Here's how it works
Identify your desired state
Think about how you would like to feel. This might be confident, calm, focused, creative, capable or grounded.Recall a time when you felt that way
Bring to mind a specific moment when you genuinely experienced that quality. It does not have to be related to the situation you are preparing for.Create a mental image of the circle
Visualise a circle on the ground in front of you. You might imagine it having a particular colour, brightness, texture or quality that represents the state you want to access.Step into the circle
Imagine yourself stepping into the circle and reconnecting with the feeling you recalled. Notice what changes in your posture, breathing, thoughts and overall sense of yourself.
You might also choose a simple phrase such as:
“I am calm and capable.”
“I know what I know.”
“I can meet this moment.”
Amplify the feeling
Allow the feeling to become a little stronger. Notice where you experience it in your body and imagine the circle becoming brighter or more vivid as the feeling develops.Step out and repeat if useful
You can repeat the exercise with other qualities you would like to bring into the situation - perhaps confidence, clarity, curiosity or calm.
So, how can the Circle of Excellence help?
The exercise creates a simple mental and sensory anchor for a state you already know how to experience.
Rather than trying to manufacture confidence from nowhere, you are reminding yourself of a time when those qualities were already present and giving yourself a way to reconnect with them.
That can be particularly helpful before situations such as:
an interview
an important meeting
a presentation
a difficult conversation
starting a new project
stepping into something unfamiliar
The aim is not to remove every nervous feeling. Some nerves are completely natural.
Instead, the practice can help you reconnect with a more resourced version of yourself alongside those feelings.
The Circle of Excellence is one of many simple techniques I draw on within my holistic guidance work.
If you would like support preparing for an important conversation, transition or opportunity, you are very welcome to get in touch.
So, how does the Circle of Excellence help?
By stepping into the circle and visualising positive emotions and energy, you are effectively reprogramming your subconscious mind to associate those feelings with a specific mental image. This means that you can call upon those positive emotions and energy whenever you need them, whether it's to boost your confidence before a big presentation, stay focused during a difficult conversation, or feel more creative when working on a project.
The Circle of Excellence is a powerful tool that can be used in a variety of situations. Whether you're looking to boost your confidence, increase your motivation, or achieve a state of peak performance, this technique can help you tap into your inner resources and access the positive emotions and energy that you need to succeed.
